Looking for a Clean Portable 4 - 6 Input Mixer
« on: December 03, 2009, 02:53:23 AM »
First off Happy Holidays Everyone.

OK some of you here know me, but I haven't Posted a lot for about 6 months.
I have a large selection of Mics an MT2 and a MIX PRE.
I just got an opportunity to shoot some Video Depositions and I'm building a Video Rig with a Clean Audio Side.

For Some Reason The Shure Brothers decided to Discontinue the M367 Mixer, which is my all time favorite for this situation. Nothing they sell even comes close, nor does anyone else's. So my thoughts are leaning to purchasing a multi track recorder like the R44 or a mixer with a built in recorder like the SD 302.

I like the SD 302 but it has no LCD Display to say exactly what is going on with the recording. I'm guessing you could run out of media and not know it, until it was too late. It looks absolutely amazing and because it's made by SD, i'm sure it sounds just at transparent as all the the rest of the SD Products.

As for the Edirol R44 i can't seem to figure out how i would use it as a mixer even though it says you can. How would you pan the channels for a stereo mix. Also I would prefer the outputs to be Balanced.

If anyone has any other suggestions i would be glad to listen.

Thanks Again,

Michael Foy

If the mixer is going to live on a cart, then this Behringer mixer runs of batteries and wall-warts. You could also use an external battery. Just a low-cost alternative.

Potential caveat...

Phantom on batteries seems to be 18 V. Also runs on 3 x 9V.

Hi Michael.
I think you got the numbers mixed up in the post. The mixer with recording is the 522 (you wrote 302, the three input field mixer).
I believe you would find the 522 a large step up from the Shure M367.

Alas, the 522 is not really meant to be the main recorder, the built-in recording is more intended as a backup. The media full probably will not be any problem either, simply switch memory card before each session (memory cards are getting cheaper every day).

The budget of course is going to be one major factor in a purchase. For the ultimate recording box I would say look no further than the Aaton Cantar X2
http://www.aaton.com/products/sound/cantar/index.php
( if you need to ask the price, you probably cannot afford it). Or perhaps a Deva Fusion 12 + Mix-12.

Back to mixers, another name to look up is SQN.

For more info you might want to visit the websites of some of the more specialized dealers. Some that come on my mind are, there definitely are more:

http://www.proav.co.uk/Audio-Equipment/Location-Mixers-Recorders/sc543_c534_pg3.aspx

Major suggestion: never buy without trying, these are major cost items so do rent a few days before buying. It will cost a little extra but might save you the full investment by stopping you from getting the wrong thing.
