Sony M-10 vs. D-50
« on: May 09, 2010, 08:47:28 AM »
Hi all,
Is the sony d-50 worth the extra $200 compared to the m-10. I have access to good board feeds at all the shows I tape and don't really have a need for the built in mics on either unit. I know that the d-50 has the digi in but I rearly use a digi in. All the shows I tape are are board>patchbay>1/8 line in. Can I save $200 and get good results with the m-10 or will I gain alot of sound quality by getting the D-50. Thanks.

I agree that the lower price model should be fine for what you want to do.  In all likelihood, you wouldn't hear any sound quality differences between the two.  That said, if you can afford the extra money, I think the D-50 is a helluva machine.  It's got all metal construction and has a number of design features that really set it apart from everything else that out there in the field.  Yeah, there's the digital input, there's the cage that runs along the top (I was surprised how handy that thing is during a show because it allows you to handle the deck without grasping the body...which means no accidental bumping of knobs, switches, etc although the hold switch also accomplishes that), the all metal construction, and the fact that it runs for 25 or so hours on a set of batteries.  The internal mics on this unit are really nice sounding.  On the chance that you could afford the D50, once you owned it, I don't think you'd look back and be sorry that you spent the extra money.

I have both. D50 was out before the M10.  M10 should suit your needs fine.

Useful comparison of features here.

As has already been said, the PCM-M10 will be fine.

Thanks Guys. I think I will go with the M-10 for now. I think I will also get the D-50 at a later date.

Sorry one more question for the M-10 owners. What cards are you guys using in the M-10. I want to get the largest capacity card that I can because the summer festival season is coming soon. My laptop took a dump and I won't have a chance to transfer shows at festivals so I need a reliable card that will handle alot of taping. Thanks for the advise.

I use an A-DATA 8gb SDHCmicro card and it works flawlessly.  It was cheap too at Frys Electronics.

I have had my eye on this one:

You may be able to find a comparable 16 gig for cheaper locally.

Nice thing about the m10 is that it has 4 gigs built in and you can do this thing called cross recording...once all 4 gigs of internal memory, it switches to the external/removable media. I don't know if you have start on the external and then go to internal automatically.

It can go the other direction too (external to internal).  Just select the memory card and enable cross-memory...

And it is seamless, as far as I can tell.  I pasted the two wavs together and it looked fine.  Couldn't hear anything either...

That's pretty bad ass, thanks for the info on that!

It's amazing how tiny these micro sd cards are and its something you wouldn't want to take out when out 'in the field' because it could get lost so easily.

Is there any advantage to using the memory sticks in the m-10 or are most of you guys just getting away with the lower cost micro SD cards. Thanks
