schoeps capsule grey vs. nickel?
« on: January 21, 2011, 12:30:50 PM »

Is there any sonic dfiference between the two?
I am planning to buy my second type of caps (MK4) to use with my CMR rig. I tape mostly jazz concerts.

Best from Italy

I would get gray since itll match the gray cmr/kcy/kc5/cmc that itll be attached to.  Of course if u dont care about that and found a good deal for nickel, then you may as well get the nickel.  Nickel probably stays clean better.

Thanks, NOLAfishwater; nice parallel and very clear.
In my sound engineering ignorance (I am on a learning curve) I thought that different materials could have a different reaction to incoming sound.

Actually I was considering to go for nickel just for the novelty and the colour contrast with the CMR....

Although shinny I think the nickel finish is more durable than the nextel grey.  I have heard the nextal finish has a tendency to flake off, where as the nickel finish does not.  Maybe others can attest to this......

I recommend getting grey for resale purposes. It seems to be the preferred color. Other than that, I see no difference. I don't own any nickel caps, but I like the way they look too.

I would buy nextel grey as well for resale value. Some people favor the nextel b/c it is less distracting if you are running onstage for a concert or something along those lines.

Louie, actually if I owned a red Lam, it would DEFINITELY be faster than any freakin' black one.

I would use the red one for open taping and the black one for stealthing.....

but seriously isn't the nickel more durable...I get the whole flashy shinny surface thing. But once they are in mounts and wind screens I am sure not much is left exposed...  The thing I never understood about the schoeps is you pay so much dam money for them, there should never be a worry about the finish.  I cant count how many times I see schoeps posted with something about the finished being flaked off somewhere.  I guess I see it with a lot of mics...true but the grey finish just seems so delicate...

This only happens with people who are careless with their gear, which is surprisingly a considerable number of tapers.  If you take reasonable care of them, they will stay nice even in Nextel gray finish.

I love my CCM41s -- probably the only time I'll get rid of them is if I retire from taping.  Although I've been thinking about hanging it up lately so stay tuned...  8)

They are quite simply, the best mics IMO.  Of course, I've only tried a handful of mics previously (AT853, CA-11, KM184, MK4/CMC6, and CCM4).  :P
