Fitting a NT1a / NT2a into a Blimp?

Hi,
Did anyone try to fit a NT2a or something in that size into a Rode Blimp? I know that there are a few DIY instructions out there, but I would prefer to use an adapted Rode Blip system.

not going to happen. The rode blimp is meant for SDC or shotgun microphones and I couldn't even imagine carrying around a LDC in a blimp system.

Rode makes a very large windscreen for the NT2A that works well.   The model number escapes me at the moment.  If you are still concerned with wind noise have wind cutter make elastic fur covers and you should be good to go.....I had NT2000's that I ran in the field with just the same windscreens minus the fur and never had a problem...

In the mid 2000s it seems the nt1a was very desirable for nature recordings since I've read a lot of what Rob Danielson wrote, but now it seems MS and/or omni mics using the techniques in my other post here are now popular.

Are you planning on using the nt1a for nature recordings?

Yes the Rode WS2 was the wind screen....and there is a company call wind cutter that make fur for any windscreen out there.  It has elastic around the bottom and comes in many diferent lengths and colors....A buddy of mine got a set of covers made for his large DPA sc windscreens...

I want to make mono recordings of people (mostly one at the time) talking very quietly with big silences (mostly room) in between, for a documentary style film project. And I really would like to use omnis. The rest of the chain is USBPre2>S/PDIF>PMD661. Instead of the NT1a, NT2a etc microphones, I was also thinking of the AT4022 which the nature recordist seem to use a lot because of its low noise floor (lower than the official specs). And, I thought, because of its brother, the AT4021, which is well regarded by some for music recoding, th sound can't be that bad either. Unfortunately, where I am, I cannot try them out and send them back.

not quite sure what kind of documentary you're going to make but the nt1a would be good if you want a LDC mic for a fair price.

To be quite honest....the nt1 is card only.....I would go with a nt2a or nt2000......many more options with the change in patterns..... and if your using it in a room....you should be fine with a normal windscreen......and if the mic is stationary no windscreen needed....unless there is moving air.....such as a fan.   however most sound guys would use a shotgun or hype card to catch dirrect dialog in an attempt to avoid aditional external noises such as back ground noise.....

But if your heart is set on an all around mic for any situation that is very quiet and has multiple uses I would spend the money and go for an NT2000 and have all bases covered...or atleast an nt2a or have you considered a cad m179 variable pattern mic....at only 10db self noise it is quiet...although not as quiet as the rodes........but only at 200$new,  cheaper used...

Very true.....but the omni pattern will give the absolute best sound in terms of space, ambient sound.  Yes the nt2000 is much more but worth it.  I have a lot of experience with the nt2000's because I owned a set for better than a year... great mic...  the fig8 would also be nice to put between 2 people as they talk to each other....

one thing that might be confusing the situation is budget...what budget are you working with in...?

My initial problem with the NT2a/NT2000 is how to possibly suspend it from a boom with some sort of wind protection. The boom's weight should not be a problem because, it can be placed on a light stand most of the time.

PS.: my budget for the mic + wind protection is very tight, about $ 800 (1k max.).

Nature recordists like the at4022 because it is a very quiet mic but perhaps if you explained what you want a little more, we would know how to recommend something. You want to record room noise with soft talking and you want a windscreen?

If you get the at4022, you can get a shure a81ws if you're concerned with the wind noise.
