How do people count shows?
« on: September 29, 2011, 04:12:17 PM »
I've been giving this some thought at the moment and wonder what fellow tapers do

I count a main band plus openers/support that I've taped as one show

but as the bands are different you could count each band as a seperate #

what do others do?

1 event/day = 1 show... even if it's a festival (1 show per day)

if I do 2 locations in 1 day (it has happened before) that = 2 shows

That's how if figure it. Each unique venue is a show. I've taped the same band at three different venues in one day = 3 shows.
I count each festival day as one show, even if I tape different stages.

It depends on my mood and the context...

If someone asked me how many shows I've been to this year, it would probably be pretty much the same as has been mentioned already.

If someone asked me how many shows I've recorded this year, I might answer based on the number of discreet recordings I've mastered.

Bottom line though is I think it's whatever you want to call it.

fyp  :-*

but yeah, I count it the same way. a 3 day festival is 3 shows, 2 events at different venues is 2 shows. I think it's easier to conceptually define in terms of "events." You can have early and late shows which tickets are sold for (tickets being sold for events) and that's 2 shows even though it's the same venue and same band, you had to buy 2 different tickets.
"This is a common practice we have on the bus; debating facts that we could easily find through printed material. It's like, how far is it today? I think it's four hours, and someone else comes in at 11 hours, and well, then we'll... just... talk about it..." - Jeb Puryear

I'm with ToneDeaf on this one... # of shows = 1 show per date per enue.  # of shows recorded = # of actual shows rolled on.

Same here.
I went to Uproar - that is one show.
I recorded 7 different bands that day.
When I get the masters done, each band will have it's own master number.
TAY028-TAY034
As each band will be kept separate from the others in my archive. And anyone who wants a copy, will more than likely only be interested in one or two of the bands. Not all 7 recordings.

Always looking for Iron Maiden and Papa Roach audio that I don't have.

I've lost count, but if I did count, tonedeaf's system is how I'd count it.

"How many shows do you go to a year" = how many venues did you show up at on a given day

"How many shows do you RECORD a year" to me = how many recordings of bands did you master.

i count a shows, as many of you stated, by venue
and if i was asked how many shows i recorded i would give the same answer
but if i was asked how many bands i have recorded then i would count openers/fest acts

for example lets say i recorded every show i went to (show meaning 1 opener and 1 main act)
i can't say i went to/saw 50 shows this yr
then be asked how many shows did i tape this yr and say 100 - i would say all 50
Mics - AKG ck61/ck63 (c480b & Naiant actives), SP-BMC-2
XLR Cables - Silver Path w/Darktrain stubbies
Interconnect Cables - Dogstar (XLR), Darktrain (RCA > 1/8) (1/8 > 1/8), and Kind Kables (1/8f > 1/4)
Preamps - Naiant Littlebox & Tinybox
Recorders - PCM-M10 & DR-60D

Number of Songs / 15 = 1 Show  ;D

Seriously - When I counted number of shows I count festival days as 2-4 shows (full day w/ latenight = 4, full day 11am - 11pm = 3, etc) but to be honest I don't track number of shows anymore.

i'm agree with the majority of responses... however many bands play at particular venue on the same day, that's 1 show (assuming it's a 1-day event).  as for multi-day festivals, i don't really consider them to be a "show" per se because it spans more than one day.  i just call it a festival.  and regardless of 2 days or 5 days it's still 1 festival.

per ticket/venue.  Hardly Strictly Bluegrass is 3 days so 3 shows for example as Darby described it
