AT853's with 4.7 mod cable. Should I run the mic power on with the M10?

you should use a preamp or battery box of some sort with it but if not, then you would probably need to use mic in. but if it gets loud there will be nothing that you can do to stop distortion, you can get a used battery box around $50 and it would be worth it, in my opinion.

I realize that a batt box would be better, but if I'm not, shouldn't I at least turn on the "plug in power" on the M10? Wouldn't that be better than nothing?

You 100% need to run mic in if you and need plug in power on
like Phil said the battery of will be we'll worth it
Or a pre is even better because the m10 supplies like 3v or something and the mics are spec at 9v

Cool thanks. Even with the AT8531 power modules I can't get a signal with line in (unless I need to change some settings on the M10). I just wondered for  situations if "some" power was better than "no" power.

I'm pretty sure I could get someone to fab up a cable that would let me run my Core Sound box with them........maybe?

wait a minute, you didn't say you had the power modules
I never had those but i THINK If you are running those you should be able to go line in and not need a battery box/pre
I is poss you might not be sending the m10 a strong enough signal and thus not seeing it on the m10
Try turning the side dial up and see what happens
If the m10 is being fed a signal via line in it will override the built in mics, if not you should see levels from the built in mics

Cranked it wide open (the M10) with the modules and it still didn't hit anything with the line in. Did fine with the mic in. I did turn the plug in power off when running them. Need two and they are a bit bulky for  . It the primary thing I gain (beside signal boost) from running a box the ability to withstand higher SPL?

so you first need to figure out what's up ith your line in
From there I personally would use the power mods going mic in unless you are going low pro nd want to cut down on gear
That way you know the mics are getting proper power

The mic's spec 9v and the M10 supplies 3. Guess I'll just run 'em and see. I figured that someone had already tried this combo..........One last question-running the 4.7 mod would have no effect on the amount of voltage needed to power the mics, correct?

I thought adding 4.7 resistors to the AT853 enabled it to run on plug in power without a battery box?   

If you build a three wire battery box per the thread below, do you still need the 4.7 resistors on the AT853's? 

And should the internal resistors in the battery box be 10k ohm or the 22 or 27 mentioned in it if you're running the AT853?

I have run at853's with the 4.7k mod going mic in on a H320, PMD620 and a M10, all deliver between 3-5v and have never had a issue and that was for some pretty loud rock/metal.

Nope, they'll run either way as long as the plug-in power is turned on. I wouldn't run that way for really loud shows though.

You shouldn't for 3-wire configured AT mics.

Robb, thanks for the mics. I never thought that the 4.7 mod was to replace the power, I thought it was to knock the signal down 10db (or whatever it is) so as to not brickwall the recorder and/or handle higher SPL. I keep reading that the mics like 9v to "achieve full dynamic range" as well as withstand higher SPL's so I didn't know if it would be better to feed them the 3v from the M10 or nothing at all.

Side note: I sent Len an email today asking what the CSB box put out, wondering if I could get a cable fabbed up so I could run the 853's off of the same box I have. He replied "-9v". I'm still scratching my head on that.

Even after 13+ years, I love the way the CSB's sound. I've made some killer recordings off of them. I'm just thinking that the 853's will be good at shows with a high drunken yeehaw factor.

853's good for shows with a high drunken factor....you must have gotten the steel cage mod with the spill resistant baffle mod.
