Keep in mind that the suggestion to shoot for -10dB on the meters is only a very general guideline.  -10dB on a VU meter doesn't necessarily correspond to a 0dB peak value.

The appropriate target value on the meters for "peaking sufficiently close to 0dBFS without going over" is going to vary with content and recording position, sometimes dramatically.  That's because the crest factor (the ratio of fast transient peaks to steady-state slow-varying sound levels) of the music or other recorded content can vary significantly.  A droning synth pad generally has a low crest-factor (the resulting VU and Peak meter levels will be similar), while a percussion hit will produce a high crest factor (Peak meter level will be high but VU meter level low).  In terms of general concert taping, recording a PA amplified concert from the soundboard enclosure will mean a significantly lower crest factor (translating to somewhat higher values on the VU meters being OK) than when recording with mics placed on stage near the sound sources, particularly if close to the drum kit where there will be much higher transient peaks that will require targeting a significantly lower point on the VU meter to avoid peak overs.

Thank you. That makes sense now. I've been doin a little more testing and feeling better about it. Got the USB to work too so I am happy about that but I still need to test out in the real world. I might have to hit this Heart concert for fun and see what happens.

It still irks me that Deity blithely advertises this device as a floating 32-bit recorder without making it abundantly clear from the get-go that this device only operates as such in mono mode.

I got it to run exclusively stealth with at853 4.7k mod at a show in about a week and a half so I have no real test time or BS shows to test at

I know I’ll need to turn on PIP
I know to keep the meter around -10 tops
I hear the battery meter sucks but I should get 15 hrs on a set of AA

I'm kind of in the same boat. I think I will be able to pre-test out this Tues but not sure. But you saw my rid and pics so getting in shouldnt be problem...really no different than before for me but I think you got it. My general rule of thumb is to use new batteries for every show. I dont mess around with that ever since I honestly have had weird dreams where I was taping and either forgot batteries or they ran out. So if all you need is a few hours to tape then you are definitely good.

Well the big one would be to set your audio to 24/48. Other than that, everything is optional to me. I didnt like it recording as soon as I turned it on so I set it to manual and same with the timecode setting. I didnt need that running to confuse me while taping. I also made sure I updated my firmware to the latest and reformatted the card prior to using it.

Sorry for the urgent post...plans changed and I can tape something tonight...so I'm in a crash course trying to figure this thing out.

Going AT853 directly in to the PR2...I'm able to get levels with mic in, but not line. I don't see any settings for supplying power to the mics. What am I missing?

I believe if you select mic for your input in settings the 5V power is then set automatically. I use mine own battery box so I selected line in and it worked good for my first test concert.

It's been so long since I used mic in...so I guess I was thinking line in is what I wanted, but I've never used a setup like this...so I guess that's it.

Yeah the other port is your output for headphones so just set the type of input you want in the settings and you'll be good.

I'll get the tapes together soon...but playing back now and VERY happy with the results!

This setup (AT853 > PR2) absolutely rules.

Is AliExpress the cheapest alternative for non-US tapers? I see it's about $200 there, but even though they have existed for ages I'm not 100% sure about them.

^ Personally, I would order from an authorized dealer. It might cost a bit more, but it is worth it for the piece of mind. You have thousands in microphones, why take the risk to save $50 or $75? It also seems that the warranty might not apply ("Please Be Advised: 3rd-party purchases, including eBay and unauthorized dealers on Amazon, are not covered under Deity’s warranty policy. Here is a link to all authorized dealers."). I didn't see AliExpress in the link, but, admittedly, I didn't look all that carefully...
