Is AliExpress the cheapest alternative for non-US tapers? I see it's about $200 there, but even though they have existed for ages I'm not 100% sure about them.

I was going to see if I could get the non US version through Alibaba but when you get to the shipping there was now an import tax that was more than the price of the unit. So I cancelled that real quick. I would not be surprised if Aliexpress had the same thing when you get to the shipping page.

Yes, they have the VAT for me at around $50, and with another discount code I am looking at around $230 in total. It seems to be sold locally (in my country) for around $350 so it’s a pretty big saving.

^ Really? In NL, it is €275 shipped (including VAT) at the first place I checked. €278 at the second with a 32 GB card and a pair of batteries.

Would the PR-2 power Schoeps CMR (+caps) without needing a preamp or am I reading the specs wrong?

aaronji: The prices seem to fluctuate on a weekly basis depending on applicable coupons, sellers who offer free shipping and tax/custom charges.

They absolutely should.

Thanks for the quick reply, guys. Was considering a Riotbox, but maybe I will have to put that on hold.

A riot box and an N Bob cable is a cheaper solution that is more flexible than CMR’s. Unless you have another need for the CMR’s for something else.

I bought the CMRs a looong time ago. IMO good for low profile and the possibility of using a different set of caps should I choose so, but I haven't studied the N Bob cables and its capabilities.

Really interesting when new stuff is released - "How small can I get my rig?" (yes I know there are smaller mics than Schoeps, haha)

Pr2 cmr is comparable to dpa 401(x)gs -> pr2 or mma:a so it is definitely smaller than the riotbox option. But the riotbox is very small and more flexible.

I think we should all contact Deity to ask that they try to address the metering in firmware updates. I hate this VU metering. I also don't use it enough to remember what levels are working well for me. I used it last night and it went okay. I think I was at +24. I need to go over the audio later. I was just reviewing the manual and it doesn't touch on the metering. Though I did notice that it says the limiter only works in Mono. I'm not sure I noticed that before. Not that I want to rely on the limiting. I kind of wish I took my R-07 last night but I think the recording will be okay overall. I have recently contacted Deity to urge them to tweak the belt clip to fit into a cold shoe mount. It's SO CLOSE. I dremeled mine a bit to make it work.

I'm going to write to them now asking about peak metering. Also, the PR-2 is STILL not listed in the product list on the contact form...

I've also asked about linking the L/R gain in stereo mode.

It seems as if Deity agrees with the late record producer and murderer Phil Spector, in terms of "bring back mono." First, the 32-bit feature only works in mono and now this.

In their defense, this is clearly intended to be a mono LAV recorder with TC sync. They pretty much crammed stereo recording in as an additional feature.

Fair enough. I was very interested in this device when it was first announced but my interest diminished to zero when I learned about its limitations that would negatively affect how I might use it. It should be an excellent device for recording in floating 32-bit when stereo is not a requirement.

it's excellent for recording loud sources when you need the stealthiest solution, too.
