I didn’t say it wasn’t capable, it’s a much more capable device than the d:vice. It’s just comparatively huge and more complex.

Huge? it's tiny

You seem to be struggling with nuance.

Capable vs comparable

Huge vs relatively huge

I can carry the d:vice in my wallet.  It's easily mistaken for a phone battery.  You actually need a plan to get the m2d2 in.  I'd say the PR2 is a more likely replacement for the d:vice than the sonosax, because it's a similar size and also easily jedi mind tricked into venues.

m2d2 is also a headphone amp (and smaller than my phone). so plug some iems into it and boom, it's my headphone amp.

you seem to just want to argue with me. I'm only saying the sonosax is a excellent sounding alternative if someone wants a small box that connects to a phone via usb and can easily be brought into any venue

Hey Now! I thought I should mention that I have been using the MOTIV Audio app, developed by SURE, on my iPhone 15 for a bit now without the DPA MMA-A app and it is working well for me. This is for recording with my DPA 4060 mikes through the MMA-A and then to my iPhone 15.  I hope that helps!

Missed this thread originally, but feel like it's worth mentioning that I've never actually used the DPA app. I just do gain control in metarecorder and it has always worked perfectly fine (iPhone 14, not 15, but don't think that matters for that bit)

Maybe ya'll are talking about two different devices?

Getting messy.  I'll try to clear it up..
The comparison being made is between DPA MMA-A and Sonosax M2-D2, based off this post:

The MMA-A has been discontinued by DPA, but I don't know anything as compact and capable (at 24/96) to replace it.

Sonosax M2-D2?

"Comparable" is subjective. Both are highly capable, relatively small devices compared to other gear, yet are not particularly close in size relative to each other, and have quite different feature sets.

The M2-D2 is larger and is a more universal device that offers far more features.

The MMA-A is considerably smaller and more specialized.  It is a dedicated preamp>ADC that provides 2-wire 5V mic power and a has a USB output.  That's all it does.

The M2-D2 can do what MMA-A does.. and can also do a lot more.  But it is larger AND more complicated.

Relative size and features are often significant factors with gear used for "stealth taping".  What matters crucially to one taper may not matter much to another.  Grawk is correct that the Diety PR-2 is a much closer comparable device to the MMA-A, both in size and capability.  Primary difference is that PR-2 is a dedicated recorder which does not require a phone to operate.

Maybe not directly, but I can get an m2d2 in almost anywhere I can get the dvice into.

I am completely unfamiliar with the MMA-A, kindms runs the SX-M2D2 and it is the smallest pre-amp I've ever held in my hands. I do not stealth much, so I will step aside here.
I am following this discussion for some reason...      >:D 8)

I'm sure that's true, but at least for me, the switch was made becasue I no longer have to disguise anything, which is a big weight off my shoulders. Like you said, it's basically a phone battery

MMA-A is round and flat, approximately 2 inch diameter X 1/2" thick.
M2D2 is a rectangular box, approximately 5 X 3 X 1 inches.

Apologies to those outside the US for quoting measurements in "freedom units"
