Saw this unit last night....sweet machine...comparing it to a V3 is pretty much dead on size wise.  Good news is Tim got a 24 bit tape of the Bridge, now we just have to figure out how the hell to chop up and burn a 24 bit disc :P

BTW, you 744T & 722 guys, if you want to do some comparisons, I did Dave Alvin & The Guilty Men last night for some British video crew. I ran 5 channels of audio, and I'll let you mix it yourself if you want...

Channels 1&2 - SR-77
Chanel 3 - QTC-1
Channels 4&5 - Soundboard L & R (delayed 2 ms)

This MIGHT fit on a single DVD, I'm still trying to figure that out. I put it on two partitions last night (24/48). I'm not trying to be a snob, but I would prefer this raw stuff to go to the 722 & 744 guys just for comparisons. Not really for General Consumption. Hit me up if you're interested.

Based on that last comparison tape you sent out, all I can say is "Hell Yes!"

Wonder what happened to those? I haven't heard back from most of the people...

I didn't find a way to dim the meter lights without turning them off - "Stealth Mode" on the demo I had. Have you figured this out? Looked to me like the options were super bright and off, which sucks. Let me know if I missed something.

Brothers

"stealth mode" turns the meters and all lights off when the backlight is off

If you press and hold down the LCD backlight key, the multi-function controller dims/brightens the LED's.

El Barto just came by with his 722...man do i have to get back into taping.  this thing is frickin cool.  it is really really sturdy.  boswell tried to tell me how sturdy it was, but i had to see for my own eyes.  it is just as bombproof as the v3.  Bart had taped some shitty band in a shitty arlington bar the other night (Ragtime) so the sample wasn't the best to really evaluate how the box sounds.  he ran 140's>722@24/96 with the limiter on.  at first we were listening through the 1/8" line out and the headphone out.  it really didn't sound all that good.  there was some weird crunchiness to the upper mids that was awful to listen to...very fatiguing.  at first we thought that might be the limiter.  then we thought maybe it was the shitty PA.  at this point, we couldn't connect it digitally since i didn't have a BNC > coax adapter so we went out to Rat Shack and got one.

When we connected it digitally, the sound was vastly improved.  I was very very impressed.  especially given that this was not a good sounding room.  the "tape" was very musical, very smooth mids and highs.  the low-end was there and sounded very nice, not too punchy, but definitely there.  this was not the tape to evaluate the low-end with though given the room and the PA.  the low-end was not loose though, which is very common with the 140s (i use to run 140s>mme and 140s>v3).  overall, i was very impressed with the sound of the tape.  It reminded me of the smoothness and musicality that i loved when i had the 140s.  I wouldn't say it was as crisp and detailed as the 140>v3 tapes I made, but again, this wasn't the tape to try and get a feel for the real sound of this box.  Overall, I was very impressed with the sound of the source.

we were not able to get my PC to recognize the HD in the 722.  whenever we would connect it to my PC, the 722 would lock up.  Bart had this problem at home as well.  overall, i am very impressed with the 722.  the analog output stage is clearly sub-par.  right now, it's hard to tell whether that's the D>A stage or the output circuitry, as I did not have mini-xlr's to use for that output stage.

i can't wait to hear this with various microphones in better rooms with better PAs.  It should perform really well.  I took some pics and will post them in a few minutes.

EDIT: 722 pics

question on the battery - are lower power batteries any smaller, or are they all about that big?  i'm much more interested in 3 hours or less of recording most of the time, and therefore i'd sacrific some running time to have a smaller battery.

the more juice, the bigger the size

the fanny pack i currently have isn't wide enough to hold the 722 with the 4022 xlrs connected.  if i got 2 right angle adapters (or very very short right angle cables) i might be able to fit it in since the 4022 xlrs wouldn't be sticking out an extra 2 inches on the left side

Scott,

Check out Walmart's sportsmen aisle in the sporting goods section.  They have hunters' fannypacks that are huge!  I use one for my JB3 and Denecke AD20.  My XLRs are not right angle and everything fits fine.  Bags run around $10.

T+ on your new toy.  Thanks for the reviews too.

Well I have finally found the box for me, can't forget the batteries or the tapes since one is attached and the other isn't needed.  I posted earlier about mule tonight, but all I can say is that I am impressed with the pre in this thing.  Anyone figure out how to doa complete hold on the machine like the button your P1 so you can get all buttons disabled?  Hopefully if i figure out the Bt thing I will post some of this weekend's shows.  El barto, you get that firewire issue fixed yet?  Now I just need another show to do!

when recording, you have to actually hold down certain buttons to make them work.  it's kind of a hold automatically built in.

for exaple: hitting stop won't stop recording.  you have to hold it for something like 350 milliseconds

the buttons seem pretty instant to me when pressed, if I hit stop, it is automatic, as far as I can tell.  There is no setting for the hold like application is there?

There is no hold like that.  You can lock the other buttons, but nothing likw what we are used to on DAT recorders.

There is a hold function.  From the FAQ:
Quote
Can the front panel controls be locked out to prevent unintended adjustment?
Yes, all front panel controls can be locked out by holding the brightness button and tone oscillator button simultaneously. In addition, when recording is occurring no button, including power, will take the unit out of record, except for a 200 ms hold of the stop/pause button. Recording is the primary function and the interface is designed to safeguard recording activity.
