so I need to figure out how to transfer some of my recordings to my computer. with better sound. as right now I am using a 1/8 analouge cable from my output of my D8 to my shitty soundcard. I have been looking at a M-Audio Audiophile 2496 soundcard. is it anygood -OR- would you reccomend something else? I also should buy a 7-Pin. so what kind do I need for one of these? and should I buy one from core-sounds if they are the only ones that I have seen that carry one. or is there a cheaper price? (maybe someone is selling?) I need to know becasue I am not good with computers and I just got some masters that need a waaay better transfer as there is no bass or crisp highs becasue of my crappy soundcard. thanks.

an EASY option -- pickup a jb3 (creative nomad jukebox 3) and a sony 7pin>optical cable -- this will allow you to x-fer shows digitally to the jb3 and then digitally x-fer the shows from the jb3 to your computer via firewire/usb.  Price would be a BIT more than a sony 7pin/coax cable and audiophile 2496, but you'd have a LOT more flexible system.

That would work, but if you don't want/need a JB3, just get a Sony/Oade/Pro-Digital 7-pin coax cable and a M-Audio Audiophile 2496 card. Its easier and one less step. But it wouldn't hurt to get another recorder too.

well I will need to upgrade to JB3 sometime down the road. but probably in a few years hoprfully. I would like to finish out the year with the D8 and then I have a brand new M1 in a box in my closet still waiting to be opened for when my D8 dies.

the scenario I outlined will involve an extra step, but the one issue with computer transfers (especially with an older pc) is that you need to leave the computer alone while the transfer is underway (to avoid dropped samples), my suggestion would take that issue out of the equation.  Also, setting up the pc to work properly with a soundcard can take a bit of extra effort (not at all hard if you're comfortable configuring a pc).  The jb3>computer interface is pretty much idiotproof. 

Few more things, keep in mind that jb3s are no longer made and their availablilty is waning. Also, the jb3 serves as a nice portable music player.

Finally, another option is tracking down and installing a dds computer drive that supports dat audio.  Search the archives for more info.  Believe it or not, this would be the CHEAPEST solution by a long shot.

Not really "through" - You use the JB3 to record the DATs digital output...then...hook the JB3 up to the computer and transfer, and track...

Suggestion: Sell the M1 before you open it...

You can probably buy a preamp, the JB3 and the 2496 with the cash from the sale...

Use the remaining hours on your D8 to transfer your existing collection....

I don't know if I can give up my DATs. I seriously love taping with a DAT. JB3's I can find on Ebay right? is there anywhere I can buy them brand new?

if you love DAT, you might consider getting a cheap DDS drive and transfer your DATs with it.
This site deals with DDS drives used to read/write audio DATs.
Softwares under unix (free) or windows (not free) are available.
However, keep in mind that, at first,  it's certainly not as easy as the DAT deck > soundcard or the DAT deck > JB3 options...
You will certainly spend some nights drinking coffee trying to figure out how this thing works...

and does the audiophile work with XP? thats all I am worrying about. and can I play through speakers with this bad boy for playback? or do I leave the soundcard I have in there and just install this one for just recording on to? please someone help me with this problem. I have already bought the Core sound 7-pin coax. and I need to know if the piece on top of the soundcard on the link picture will come with that as well? I didn't find that anywhere if it did. becasue I need that in order to use the 7-Pin. am I correct? and btw. thanks everyone for putting up with my stupid and repetitive questions that everyone asks all the time so I give a huge +T for this. thanks guys.

It works fine with XP. Great soundcard, I sold mine, but got a lot of great use out of it.

the M-Audio Audiophile 2496 works perfectly fine under Win98(SE) and WinXP, i know from experience.

$85 + s/h, unless you're in TN, NJ, or CA where they add sales tax - which would still be cheaper than Core-Sound.

you can find M-Audio DeltaDio 2496 or the Audiophile 2496 on ebay for cheap.
