MicroTrack Audio Play back Problem
« on: December 31, 2005, 11:08:19 AM »
I have been recording with my MT since it came out and have all of the updated firmware v1.2.3 installed in it.  Has anyone else been experiencing difficulty in being able to listen to files that they recorded in their entirety?  I am able to listen to approximately the first sixty seconds in playback and then the audio goes silent.  I am assuming there is something to do with the playback audio buffer size.  I can listen to the file cokmpletely upon trasnferring it to my pc and playing it from my hard drive.  The quality of the files are great as I have been using the  Core-Sound Mic 2496 Mic preamplifier a/d converter with a pair of DPA 4061 microphones.  I am amazed how accurately the sound is reproduced using these microphones when recording at 24 bit 44.1 on this rig.  I am using 44.1 so that I will not have any issues with converting to 16 bit to place certain files on CD's if needed.  Also am looking forward to trying 24/96 recording when that is available as I am presently going in coaxial cable for spdif.

I have the problem when it is the first file recorded so I have been making a short (5-10 sec) blank file first then the second file seems to play back ok.

I haven't seen this problem either but with 3 others chiming in that they have I have little doubt that it really happens.

So it looks like you're recording using the 1/4" inputs with it set to 44.1/24 bits.

What brand/type/capacity or media are you using?

How long of a recording is it? Does it happen on just about any length recording?

If you just reboot the Microtrack does it have the playback problem does it have the problem only if you've just completed the recording and try to play it back?

When the audio stops playing, does the time counter keep going on the Microtrack or does it stop too?

With this info maybe we can find out what situation triggers the problem.

BTW, Regarding 24/96 S/PDIF, give it a try. I've have no recording issues with the latest firmware (1.2.3). It pops for me once on playback but the actual recording is ok.

After the last post I set up and check and the spidf work at 24/96.  Do you think they know they fixed it or that in fixing something else this also got fixed?

If we can reproduce this problem easily we can email M-Audio....
So: reformat the CF card. Boot the MT. What else must we do to experience the problem?

Today was the first time I tried to play back more than a few seconds of a recording. I have two files on the card, each at almost 2 hours in length, recorded 24bit/44.1. The first file will play back until 9:45, the second file will play back until 27:44. This really doesn't make sense. I rebooted and it always happens to each file in the exact same place. I am running 1.2.3 firmware.

steelcorner,

I am recording at 44.1 /24 bit via spdif.  I recently deleted all files from the CF card and recorded a concert in Las Vegas this past week (Jeff Lorber at the Suncoast Casino).  Since this concert the MicroTrack has not been limiting the playback of any files on the recorder.  The fast forward function seems to move quite sluggishly which I am assuming is due to the speed of the media being used (ie the 45X card which I am using is slower to advance then if using the faster 80X media).  This is not really a big issue for me as I am very happy with the recording quality which I am getting with my set-up (DPA 4061 > Core-Sound Mic 2496 > SPDIF Coaxial Cable >MT 24/96>    24 bit/ 44.1

The results sound incredible when recorded in a good environment.  The Jazz/Blues/Rock concerts which I have attended and recorded recently sound amazing:  Stanley Clarke, Derek Trucks Blues Band,  Cream at Madison Square Garden.  The ease of use of this gear is so simple to achieve great results I am constantly amazed.  The sound is easily as good or better then most any CD's which I have purchased even without any post production editing.

I have recently tested playing the MT connected directly to a very high end 2 channel audio system (not mine unfortunately) using German Physics Lorely loudspeakers ($95,000.00 for the pair connected to other amazing equipment) the sound was as good as the original concert.  I have also transferred a few files to CD24 file format using the Alesis software which may be downloaded from their website so that I could playback files burned to disc on my friends Alesis MasterLink ML-9600 High-Resolution Master Disk Recorder. At 24 bit / 44.1 I am able to place 45 minutes on a disc.

I have no clue what the cause of the audio playback issue on the Microtrack was however I am not presently experiencing the issue any longer! As we speak I listening to the Jeff Lorber file in its entirety with it being the only file on the MT24/96.  I have also erased all files from the recorder and then copied the file back to the CF card from my PC after renaming the file which also works without incident.  I have a Firewire CF card Reader which provides much faster transfer to my pc then uisng the USB 2.0 from the MT via my USB 2.0 input to the computer.  A file of a little more then 1.0 gig took only 2:35 seconds to transfer which is a lot quicker, I am  using just a Kingston Elite Pro 45X CF card.

Same problem here.  Trying to playback lengthy 320 mbps mp3's after about 5 minutes the level meters start jumping erratically and the sound goes mute.   No problem transferring the file to computer and playing it back there.
