Confused about stand mount types
« on: April 21, 2006, 09:18:13 AM »
I'm in the market for a mic stand, and have been looking at Manfrotto. I borrowed one from a friend, and I think it's a Manfrotto 004 (it has a Manfrotto label on it, and a barely discernable "004" inscribed on one of the legs). The mount on it is 3/8" threaded, which is fine, because I have a t-bar and a 3/8" female to 5/8" male adaptor.

I looked in the Manfrotto products page at

http://www.manfrotto.com/Jahia/cache/offonce/pid/2513?livid=2&idx=6

and it lists the mount as "Type 19", but nowhere can I find exactly what "Type 19" means. From borrowing it, I've found I like it, and it works fine and will go higher than I probably need (I mainly tape in clubs). As an added bonus, a local camera shop lists it in their on-line catalog, so I can go and pick it up. From zooming in on the picture, it looks like a threaded mount, but I can't be sure (and the Manfrotto "Contact Us" thing doesn't seem to work :(). Does anybody know if a "Type 19" mount is actually a 3/8" thread?

Any info would be appreciated. Thanks.

Aloha,
Brad

I tried the Manfrotto "contact us" page again, and it worked, and I got a response very quickly. Unfortunately, it conflicted with what their on-line catalogue said, so they forwarded my question to a distributor, who replied:

Quote
Pre 2003 the Manfrotto stand had been available with the 1/4” thread, adapter style #18 and 3/8” thread adapter style #19.  In 2003 Manfrotto started to produce the stands with just the 5/8” stud, #40 adapters, whoever they continued to ship the others until stock was depleted. This year they changed the top adapter back to the #19 but also include a ¼” adapter ART-015. The issue once again is what is being shipped. Manfrotto sends us the #40 adapter until their stock is depleted than we will receive the newer version 3/8 + ¼ adapter.  In turn Amplis does the same. To complicate the issue the box is not clearly marked to insure which style adapter is in side. The only way to tell is too physical examine the stand.

If you are purchasing this from one of our dealers you will have to check what adapter they have in stock.

And I just called the store, and they said they didn't stock them, and that it's a special order. :( I guess I'll drop by and see what they have in stock.

Here, then, is the general question: if I buy a light stand at a camera store, and it doesn't have a 3/8" or 5/8" threaded mount, will the store also stock an adaptor that'll get from whatever mount the stand has, to either a 3/8" or 5/8" threaded mount?

as far as them stocking the adapter- i doubt it- best bet is to order an adapter from cascade media or somewhere like that.

Thanks for the advice, everybody. I ended up going to the store and checking out what they had, which included a stand that I think is in the not-quite-as-good-as-Manfrotto category, but it was a bit cheaper, and they had it in stock. It has a 1/4" threaded mount, so I bought a 1/4" threaded to 3/8" threaded (Manfrotto) adaptor. I'll give it a couple of tries over the next few weeks, and see how it works. I may end up going with micsupply, but I'm not a fan of ordering over the web, especially over the border (I live in Ottawa, Ontario).

Brad:

Check with Trew Audio. They have two locations, one in Nashville, TN and one in Toronto, ON. Glen is a good guy and his sales staff are also very good. Also when I lived in Toronto, there was a very good camera store off King St. I can't remember the name, but maybe send a PM to Wiggle and see if she can remember the name of the store (she lives in the GTA).

Go Sens!
