Max stand height
« on: June 16, 2006, 11:29:53 PM »
I am looking into stands and trying to figure out how big of one I need. For most open taping shows will 8 feet be high enough?

What is your rig setup? Active or full bodied? Typical setting taping (big venues or clubs)?
I don't know just where I'm going
But I'm gonna try for the kingdom, if I can

C4s. I would think mostly small stuff but I want to be ready for anything.

I get one that goes to 11 or 12 feet at a minimum; 8 feet is not tall enough in my opinion, especially for crowded rooms with chatty crowds, with an 8 foot stand your taped will be filled with noise and chatter

I rarely run - or find that I wish I had run - higher than 8'.  But I record in small to medium sized clubs (~200 - ~2,000), mostly FOB or on-stage.  But even in bigger venues, I don't really find myself wanting to run higher.  YMMV.

with your schoeps Brian I would agree, but I believe the higher end mics like yours will reject the chatter and background noise better than lesser mics, so you can get by with a lower height that many of us cannot, I know my recordings would be junk if my mics were flown at 8 feet

Another option:  get a short-to-medium height stand and add an extension.  Two good options for an extension, IMO:

<1>  3' - 7'6" Bogen extension

<2>  ~20" Bogen flex arm (gooseneck)

Both will come in handy not only when you want to run higher on your stand, but also for increased flexibility in mic placement when clamping to railings, tables, pipes, ceiling lamps, whatever.  FWIW, I've outlined my complete clamping setup.

i have the aea stand that SS sells, ive had it since 1999 and its a tank(but also 175 dollars) and goes to 15 feet i believe, thatw ay i am ready for anything(tho id never put it up to 15ft)

only drawback(if ya even wanna call it a drawback) is the large footprint, but the large footprint is godsent at festivals and the like where conditions arent always flat like a rooom floor is

Yeah. I have that AEA stand too. I also have an AKG tripod stand with a boom arm and an Atlas kick drum mic stand for on stage set-ups. I can cover everything with those three. I really like the AEA stand, it's relatively light, goes plenty high if needed and is very stable.

I've taken up your advice Brian and gotten the same equipment. This is a relatively compact (especially for storage) and flexible setup.

For clubs and other indoor shows, I usually run around 8-9 feet.  For outdoor shows and shows where crowd noise becomes an issue, I will go up to around 10-11 feet.  The Bogen 3373 can go that high, as can the AEA stand.  I believe these are the two most popular stands when you need to go over 10'.

I meant to add that I've used this exact same setup after reading this equipment list in another post. All this stuff works well together and has you prepared for just about anything. The Flex Arm is plenty stout for an AKG bar and a pair of C4's. The 3373 stand is one nice piece of hardware, especially how it folds down to an 18" long package.

I thought the 3373 only extended to 7'?  If it goes 8-9 feet, I GOTTA git me one.

What makes the Schoeps reject this better than other mics?  I could see it if they were cards vs. hypers, but I don't see how the brand will change that affect since the polar patterns are similar.
