Edit to add that I couldnt find 1 working unit on ebay! There were a ton of them a while back, but now theyre all "sold as-is" starting at a penny.

I went from DAT to iRiver h140 and love it.  I've run it analog & digital in without any problems.   

The only drawback for the iRiver h140 is that there seems to be a quality control issue with the refurbished units on ebay.  The first two units that were sent to me had hardrive problems.  (I don't believe that this applies to the h120's, FWIW).

the iriver batt lasts a LONG time from what I hear.... no need for external.

yea it was pretty nice taping the unholy alliance tour 5+ hours straight, not having to worry about bat/tape changes.

pretty much it comes down to whether or not you need to have greater than 44.1 khz recording.

It looks like you're in the 16bit realm, so I'd stay with a JB3 or iRiver H120. I used a JB3 and it was rock solid. I also use an iRiver, but I've never tried the digital input. Due to the small size, better metering, better battery life, generally lower price, and reports of fine optical in performance, I voted for the iRiver.

seems to me if one is purchasing new gear and the cost is negligable and within ones budget that it would only make sense to purchase the product that one could use in the future if one desires to upgrade other pieces of gear.  Just a thought.

I agree with you there, but I'd still suggest the iRiver or JB3 over a Microtrack. The R-09 doesn't have a digital input, so it doesn't function as a "bit bucket." While some users have been successful with a Microtrack, many others have had problems. The lack of a 2GB auto-split is an issue.

The original poster also stated he'd like to spend $250 max, doesn't need 24bit now, and is planning on an R-4 next year. I think the iRiver and JB3 are the only choices under that criteria.

I did not see the part about an r4 next year.   I would go with the least expensive most reliable and would have to agree that is the JB3.

na, the iRiver smokes the JB3.  faster uploads, better firmware(rockbox), smaller, and doesn't overheat.  brand new for $150
