howdy.  ive walked myself through the yahoo groups jb3 recording instructions and havent seen the meter levels on the jb3 move.  I have an optical cable going from jb3 to ua5.  its plugged into the Optical/line in, the switch is on the optical side, not coaxial.  ADV switch is set to OFF.  Recording Source is sest too Digital.  Sample Rate at 44.1Khz.  Have I put a switch to the wrong setting?  The Phantom 48V LED isn't lighting up, i've pressed the LED in and i still do not see the levels moving?  My best guess is that the phantom power isnt powering the mics, thus no sound being recorded. 

Any suggestions?

I haven't used the UA5 in a while now but I believe the 'record source' needs to be set to analog (hence, the mic signal).  The SVU-1 is NOT a necessity, but some folks like to use it to refine the levels they see on the JB3 which are very tiny.

Yep... You get meters on the JB3... they just sort of suck.

If you are running mics into the UA-5 set the source to analog.

You can still monitor the levels on the jb3, but you're right, they can't be set by the Jb3.  An SVU-1 is not necessary, rather it's a luxury from the weak meters that the jb3 provides, although I ran them for a year and a half and really had no problems with them, I defintiely got used to it.

This might be a stupid question, but is your UA-5 digi-modded? It's worth asking.

If so, try pushing that p48 button some more.  Sometimes it takes a few hits to turn on.

the button indication phantom 48v power is ON doesn't glow red when i push it.  monitor sw button did glow and as soon as a pressed it it turned off and will not light up again...  still no meter levels jumping up and down.

saxophoner: The p48 button should definitely glow red when it is on.  Has the UA-5 been on for a while before you press the p48 button?  For some reason you can't turn p48 on until a few seconds (maybe 5-10) after you turn the ua-5 on.  Seems weird that your monitor button won't light up again tho...

what most are talking about is not what your problem is i don't think --your problem is you are not getting levels because you are not getting a signal

Yes they do, they just suck.  They move and everything.

its set to optical, has been since the begining.  havent seen the bars move yet    the phantom/monitor sw buttons don't light up when pushed.  its a Oade Digi-Mod UA5, could this be a problem for not working?  first time buyer here and when i got it figured it would all just work when i plugged it in.  guessed wrong.  im confident it all works, i think im just doing something wrong.

How are you powering the UA5?  If the power source is providing too low voltage, that may explain why phantom isn't working.

this charger is from my answering machine.  it powers on the ua5, i dont know if its enough to power the unit fully.

first of all, you don't want AC, you want DC.  150ma is not nearly enough to power the UA5, it wants minimum of 500ma...  If it powers up, but doesn't have phantom, it's a power issue.
