Mid-Side recording advice/ options
« on: January 23, 2007, 08:02:03 PM »
I have been thinking for a while about getting an inexpensive LD mic that has a figure-eight pattern option to do some M/S recordings with my V3. There are tons of low cost, good sounding options out there as far as the LD. What I wonder is, will it work or sound good if I use a C-481 as the Mid microphone? Specifically, the LD as figure-eight and the, SD C-481, cardioid facing forward?

The idea of making a recording, then determining the width of the soundstage in post production appeals to me.
Reality is merely an illusion, albeit a very persistent one.

i think it would definantly sound good with a 480 as the mid. thow a ADK TL in there and it would be pretty nice. ive seen singles go unsold for <300 lately on ebay

Yeah, Dustin, this is what I have been thinking too. There are lots of manufacturers making variable pattern LD microphones now.

Go for an AT-4050.  They are sweet sounding mics, and can do cardioid, omni, or fig 8.

M/S is fun stuff.  I've used a 4050 and a km184 to do it a few times and the results have been awesome.

Once you go M/S.... There is NO looking back.

the 20 cap by far the best purchase i've made.  not to mention a KILLER deal on it from ebay.  ;D
I actually work for a living with music, instead of you jerk offs who wish they did.

bwaaaahahahahahaha.... that is awesome!

Any thoughts on a transformer-out mid coupled with a transformerless side...or vice versa?

I tried this once (1k/414xls) and the results we ok, but the setting was far from ideal.

Two great things about M/S are setting the soundstage in post, and the ability to mix two different microphones to create a blend of their qualities.  I ran M/S onstage several times using an AK40 as the mid and a 394 as the side. I ended up with the smooth Neumann mids and highs, and a solid AKG bottom end.  Nice!   8)

CK 94, is that side address for the figure 8? That's a possiblity. Initially, I'd like to start off cheap for the figure eight microphone, to see if I really like it. That's why I was thinking LD, as they can be had for little money. I wonder if there is an inexpensive SD option?

Too much for me to swing right now.

I'm looking at the Apex 415...

When I was looking, the ck94 was about the cheapest figure 8 capsule option among interchangeable SD mics.  That was a couple years ago, so I don't know what new options may have surfaced since then.

So, is it side address? ...and does it sound good?

I wish I had $500 to play around with for this... I'm just looking to experiment now. If I like what I hear, I can raise the cash. I just want to check out the possibilites with M/S.

I haven't had the V3 for long and I know it can be set-up up for M/S recording.
