Edirol R-09 connecting to Soundboard Question

Anyone have any advice or experience connecting an R-09 to a SBD to record a gig?  I'm wondering if I'll need a pre and/or an attenuator and which input to use to get the best results?  And should I worry about the length of the patchcord?  I know I've got to use an adaptor to go 1/8" to 1/4".  Thanks in advance for any and all assistance.

No pre is needed, the cable depends on the board you're patching out of.  Either it will have 1/4", RCA or XLR outputs, so you need to have cables to for all situations.  Basically you just need a Y cable that goes from the single 1/8" connector to dual whatever (XLR, 1/4, RCA) and you're all good.  The level should be fine if the engineer sets it for you, just ask them to turn it down if it's too loud.

So, should I go "mic in" or "line in"?  Thanks for the feedback...

I tape soundboard with female XLR's > 1/8 > Line in R-09 and it works like a charm.

If you want to totally be safe get

2XFemale XLR->Female RCA
2X1/4" RCA adapter
1XGood long rca cable (you don't want to be in the sound guys way)
1XRCA -> stero mini plug adapter

These should cover you in any situation.  Most times I have patched the SBD op asks for RCA, however, if there is someone else in RCA they can also take the Female XLR.  That being said female XLR is not always available. 

I just keep all the adapters in my bag in a zip lock.  Having the varity has saved me a few times and also helped other tapers when I'm already patched and they don't have the adapters for the ports that are left.

Shouldn't you take XLR before RCA because RCA cables are noisy as heck?

If you have the choice, however, most patches I've done the only option has been RCA.

If we were really smart we'd just bring along a passive DI box to balance the RCA signal and output XLR>1/8" to minimize any RF being picked up by the RCA cables.

This is probably a dumb question, but...  Assuming there are 2 1/4" jacks (left and right channels) that I'll need to merge into one 1/8" stereo plug into the R-09, will those 1/4" jacks have 2 leads or 3? mono or stereo?  I hope this makes sense...

Well if they're balanced outs then they'll be TRS, but it doesn't really matter since the 1/8" cable is unbalanced anyway, just get a dual 1/4 to 1/8" Hosa and you'll be good.
